Popular American Echatology

My good friend, Volker, just sent me this news in the post:

USA: One person in four expects in 2007 the return of Christ

Crikey. Rapture underpants on standby, then (I don’t like heights) – or asbestos underpants if you are on the wrong side (left behind).

Hmmm. My German isn't good enough to tell if "recht wahrscheinlich" adequately translates "somewhat likely" which is what the 14% said. Which is to say that characterizing this poll as "One person in four expects in 2007 the return of Christ" is somewhat misleading. Here's the English version of the poll results (taken from beliefnet):

"Pollsters found that 11 percent of those surveyed said it is "very likely" that Jesus will return to Earth this year. An additional 14 percent said it was "somewhat likely."

"Twenty-five percent of those polled said it was "not too likely,"

"compared to 42 percent who said it was "not at all likely." Eight percent said they did not know or were not sure."

Which seems to me to indicate that 92% haven't got the "like a thief in the night" message.

When I saw the AP report on this, I tried to ignore it. Then you blogged it. Sigh.
