If it smells good, smoke it
Finally, I’ve returned to Germany, to blogdom, to comments on Christ’s resurrection, to various German craziness associated with ‘May Day’, to gangs of roaming sausage sucking, bear swilling, thigh slapping, large belching men, who don’t know a word for ‘fluffy’, and ... to something else very exciting. Very.
*drum roll*
But before I share the details, I had a great time in Old Blighty. Especially, of course, at my sister’s wedding. One nice bonus of acting as an Usher is that I received a present from the Bride and Groom – a large cigar, and beautiful pipe with aromatic Holland House Tobacco to smoke! Being a little more liberated than in my earlier religious incarnations (the motto then was ‘If it feels good don’t do it’), I’m more open to experimenting these days (the new motto being ‘if it feels good quickly do it lots before the guilt wells up and makes you feel like crap, and the wife lynches you’). Nevertheless, I’ve only ever smoked one cigar in all my life, and never from a pipe, and having just read this I’m feeling rather sobered. Also on a bright note, I purchased some fantastic books that are some of the most exciting I’ve ever read, but more on those another time.
All of this is to pave the way for my next post ...

Another pipe smoking theologian—hurray!
I have smoked a pipe for several years, started during college. The risk to your health is fairly minimal if you don't inhale (trust me, after a whole bowl of tobacco, you will feel plenty good without inhaling) and only smoke occasionally. There are folks who smoke 4-5 bowls a day, but the risk for once-or-twice-a-week smokers like yours truly seems to be pretty low.
Hi Chris,
It was a shop in Tübingen that got me started, a theological book shop. The owner is, I believe, an ex-student of Jüngel, and the shop stinks of pipe smoke. But I somehow liked it so thought I'd give a try. I may not smoke more than once or twice, but I thought a very little wouldn't hurt. I was thinking more once or twice a month actually.
All the best
I've also been smoking a pipe on and off for the last half dozen years. There are few things more delightful than sitting at a campfire with a Trappist beer in one hand and a pipe in the other.
Unfortunately smoking is a bit of a vice for me (smoking a pipe leads me to smoking little cigars rolled with pipe tobacco, and it's quite easy to start smoking a pack of those every two or three days), so I've cut myself off from it altogether.
More power to those who can just smoke occasionally... I'm more than a little envious.
Dan, I was blessed to fall in love with my wife-to-be soon after I started smoking. This enchanting woman told me, "Oh, I don't date smokers." And the rest was history. :-) She doesn't mind the pipe, though.
Hi Dan,
This is my problem - I suspect that if I start, I won't be able to keep it at a safe level.
Oh man! You got a pipe and some pretty good tobacco to smoke! Cool! I'm jealous.
So . . . you gonna smoke it?
